CLEVELAND, Ohio — LeBron James of the Cavaliers will become the 10th player in NBA history to win back-to-back Most Valuable Player Awards when results of the nationwide voting are announced on Sunday, sources have told The Plain Dealer.

James is expected to have a press conference at The University of Akron and accept the Maurice Podoloff Trophy and the Kia car that comes with the honor Sunday.

Last season, when James won for the first time, he accepted at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in his hometown of Akron

James played numerous high school games at Akron’s Rhodes Arena, is a supporter of the Zips basketball program and head coach Keith Dambrot, and holds his annual Nike camp for the top high school prospects at the university’s facilities.

NBA Commissioner David Stern is expected to formally give James the trophy before Monday’s Game 2 against the Boston Celtics at The Q.

At age 25, James becomes the second-youngest to win back-to-back MVPs. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a couple of months younger when he won his back-to-back award in 1972. The others two win back-to-back are Steve Nash, Tim Duncan, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Russell and Abdul-Jabbar. Only Bird, Chamberlain and Russell ever won the award three years in a row.

Last year James won in a landslide, getting 109 of the first-place 121 votes given out to sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the league. This year, James is expected to approach winning the award unanimously.

However, several voters have said they did not plan to vote for James. This year the NBA also allowed fans to vote, with their preference to make up the 122nd vote. The results of the voting will be announced Sunday by the league.

James averaged 29.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 8.6 assists per game in leading the Cavs to a second consecutive 60-win season. He was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month four times during the season.

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played during February.

James paced the league in scoring (32.6 ppg), was fourth in assists (10.5 apg) and added 6.8 rebounds and 2.1 steals in 41.4 minutes. James scored at least 20 points in all 11 contests, leading Cleveland to an Eastern Conference-best 8-3 record. James recorded his third triple-double of the season on Feb. 18, with 43 points, 13 rebounds and a career-high tying 15 assists. On Feb. 6, James set a franchise record with 35 points in the first half of Cleveland’s 113-106 win at New York. James finished the game with 47 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and a season-high five steals.

James paced the league in scoring, averaging 35.0 points and was second in assists (10.3 apg), leading Cleveland to a 3-0 week. James also averaged 7.0 rebounds in 43.0 minutes. On Feb. 6, James scored a franchise-record 35 points in the first half and had a season-high tying five steals in the Cavaliers win over New York. James recorded his 19th double-double of the season with 22 points and a career-high tying 15 assists in a win over Memphis on Feb. 2. This is James’ fifth Player of the Week award this season.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James was named today as the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played in the month of January.

James averaged 30.7 points on .503 shooting, 7.3 rebounds and 8.5 assists in 39.1 minutes per game, leading the Cavs to an NBA-best 12-3 (.800) record for the month of January. Their 12 wins also marked the Cavaliers most wins in any January in franchise history and the team finished January by winning their final eight games of the month. The Cavs currently stand at a league-best 39-11 and own a season-high nine-game winning streak. James has now won the award for the 14th time in his career: for the third consecutive month this season, four times in 2008-09; two times during 2007-08, once in 2006-07, twice in 2005-06 and twice during the 2004-05 campaign. During the month, James ranked first in points per game (30.7), second in assists per game (8.5) and fifth in steals per game (1.6) among Eastern Conference players. He scored 20 or more points in 14 of the 15 games this month, including nine games of 30 or more points.

Piling up Awards

In a 106-94 victory over the Trail Blazers on January 10th, James scored 41 points on 13-19 (.648) shooting from the field, added 10 rebounds and eight assists. It marked his fifth game this season of at least 40 points (tied with Carmelo Anthony for the second-most 40-point games this season) and notched his league-leading third game of the season with at least 40 points and at least 10 rebounds.

James knocked down a season-best six three-pointers on his way to a game-high 37 points versus the Oklahoma City Thunder on Jan. 23rd. He also tallied nine rebounds, a then season-high tying 12 assists and blocked Kevin Durant’s game-winning layup attempt in the closing seconds of the game.

He scored 12 points in the final period, including the go-ahead basket with 40.5 seconds left that put the Cavaliers up for good in their 93-87 win over the Los Angeles Lakers at The Q on January 21st. He finished with a game-high 37 points, five rebounds and nine assists. The win gave the Cavaliers a season sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers for the third time in the past four seasons. In the Cavs’ 92-91 victory at Miami, James scored a Heat opponent record tying 20 points in the second quarter on his way to a team-high 32 points. It marked his 10th career 30-point game against Miami. His steal of a Dwyane Wade pass with 6.9 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter gave him the 900th steal of his career and after being fouled, he hit two game-winning free throws.

In the final game of the month vs. the Clippers at home, he scored 23 of his game-high 32 points in the first quarter, while knocking down 5-6 (.833) shots from behind the arc and tying a Cavaliers individual record for three-pointers made in a period. The Cavaliers also tied the NBA record for total three-pointers made in a period, with 11 that night. His 23 points also tied a Quicken Loans Arena individual record for points in a period and was one point away from his franchise record. James has now scored at least 20 points in a period four times this season (three of them in the last 10 games) and 10 in his career.

The New Orleans Hornets’ Chris Paul was named the Western Conference Player of the Month. Other nominees for Eastern Conference Player of the Month presented by Kia Motors were Boston’s Rajon Rondo, Charlotte’s Stephen Jackson, Chicago’s Derek Rose, Miami’s Dwyane Wade, and Toronto’s Chris Bosh.

With winning all three games this week, James has led the Cavaliers to an NBA-best 34-11 record and a 17-3 record at home. The Cavs are also 16-5 (.762) against the Western Conference, including a perfect 8-0 against Western opponents at The Q.

James finished with game highs 28 points and 11 assists for his 14th double-double of the season and added nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks in a 108-100 victory over the Raptors on January 19th. He also became the second player this season to lead his team outright in all five of those categories (Dwight Howard).

James tallied a game-high 37 points on 13-25 (.520) shooting, a game-high nine assists, five rebounds, two steals and one block in a 93-87 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on January 23rd. The Cavaliers have also won eight of the last 11 meetings with the Lakers and five of the last six in Cleveland.

On January 23rd at Quicken Loans Arena, he led his team to a 100-99 victory over Oklahoma City, beating the Thunder for the fifth straight contest. He had a near triple-double with a game-high 37 points, a season-high tying 12 assists and nine rebounds in 43 minutes. James has now scored 25 or more points in eight straight games.

The Denver Nuggets’ Chauncey Billups was named the Western Conference Player of the Week. Other nominees for the Eastern Conference Player of the Week were Atlanta’s Jamal Crawford and Joe Johnson, Miami’s Dwayne Wade, Milwaukee’s Andrew Bogut, Orlando’s Dwight Howard and Toronto’s Chris Bosh.

39.1 minutes per game. James wins the award for the third time this season and the 23rd time in his career. Last week, he was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month presented by KIA Motors for games played in the month of December.

James finished with 23 points on 7-12 (.583) shooting, seven rebounds, eight assists, two blocks and one steal in a 121-98 victory over the Washington Wizards at Quicken Loans Arena on January 6th. The win marked the second largest margin of victory for the Cavaliers this season.

On January 8th in Denver, James put up 35 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out seven assists. In the second road game of the week, on January 10th against the Portland Trail Blazers, he finished with 31 (20 points in the first quarter alone) of his 41 points in the first half, and tallied 10 rebounds and eight assists to record his 12th double-double of the season. It was James’ fifth game this season with at least 40 points, which ties him for second most this season league-wide. The game also marked the third time this season he has scored at least 40 points and grabbed at least 10 rebounds, the most in the NBA.

January 6, 2010 – LeBron James was named today as the NBA’s Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played in the month of December.

James averaged 28.6 points on .482 shooting, 7.4 rebounds and 7.6 assists in 38.8 minutes per game, leading the Cavs to an NBA-best 14-3 (.824) record for the month of December, which also marked the Cavaliers most wins in any December in franchise history. James has now won the award for the 13th time in his career; for the second time this season, four times in 2008-09; two times during 2007-08, once in 2006-07, twice in 2005-06 and twice during the 2004-05 campaign.

During the month, James ranked first in points per game (28.6) and field goals made per game (10.2), tied for first with one triple-double, ranked second in assists per game (7.6) and free throws made per game (6.4), and was fourth in steals per game (1.7) among Eastern Conference players. He scored 25 or more points in 12 of the 17 games this month, including three games of 40 or more points and dished out at least 10 assists in four consecutive contests for the first time in his career (Nov. 28 – Dec. 6).

In a 104-99 victory over the Trail Blazers on December 11th, James scored 33 points on 14-24 (.583) shooting from the field, added seven rebounds, seven assists, two blocks and one steal. It was the fourth time this season that James had reached those levels in all five categories while no other player in the league has done that even once this season. On December 16th at Philadelphia, he tallied a game-high 36 points, six rebounds, seven assists, one block and three steals, which marked the 11th straight game that he had at least 10 points, five rebounds and five assists (making that his fourth such streak of 10+ games). The only other player to do so since 2003-04 besides James is Kevin Garnett (11 games in 2004).

James finished with 29 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals in their 109-91 win over the Phoenix Suns on December 21st. That victory snapped the Suns’ 19-game home win streak dating back to March 12, 2009, also a loss to the Cavaliers, and snapped the Suns’ 36-game home steak of scoring 100 or more points. In a 117-104 overtime victory at Sacramento on December 23rd, he posted his second triple-double of the season, scoring 26 of his 34 points in the first half and adding a season-high 16 rebounds and 10 assists. He was the first player since Vince Carter during the 2006-07 season to total at least those numbers in a single game.

In the final game of the month, he posted a season-high 48 points versus Atlanta on his birthday (Dec. 30). The only other player to score 40 or more points on his birthday at age 25 or younger was Mark Aguirre, who scored 40 on his 24th birthday in 1983. It was the third most points scored by a player on his birthday in NBA history (Dominique Wilkins 53 points in 1987 at age 27 and teammate Shaquille O’Neal 61 points on his 28th birthday in 2000).

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Kobe Bryant today were named the Eastern andWestern Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Dec. 21, through Sunday, Dec. 27.

James led the Eastern Conference in scoring (28.8 ppg), was second in assists (7.3 apg) and added 7.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals as Cleveland went 4-0 on the week, including three wins on the road. On Dec. 23, James recorded his second triple-double of the season with 34 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists in a 117-104 overtime win at Sacramento. James’ 29 points on Dec. 21 helped the Cavaliers snap Phoenix’s 19-game home win streak. This is James’ second Player of the Week nod this season.

NEW YORK, Dec. 4, 2009 — The Cleveland Cavaliers’ LeBron James was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Month for games played during October and November.

James paced the Eastern Conference in scoring (29.2 ppg), was second in assist (8.0 apg) and added 6.7 rebounds per game, leading the Cavaliers to a 12-5 start. James is one of only two players to record a triple-double this season (Rafer Alston) after recording 23 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists on Oct. 28 at Toronto. With 38 points on Oct. 27, James set a franchise record for points in a season opener and with his seventh point became the youngest player to score 13,000 (24 years, 301 days old). James was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 23 after averaging a league-high 34.3 points for the week and leading Cleveland to a 3-1 record.
